Global Exchange Costa Rica
GECR was originally a project started by Rochester, NY locals, Allyson Chapman and Winona Brown in collaboration with teacher Callie Rabe, Costa Rican contractor, Leo Miranda Valerin, and Costa Rican cook and business owner, Rita Rodriguez. GECR trips are modeled after the annual Allendale Columbia School service trip that Ms. Rabe has organized for the past 7 years. GECR aims to continue the growing relationship between local Costa Rican communities and U.S. volunteer groups. GECR organizes and runs enriching and affordable service trips for anyone interested in engaging in Service Work on a larger scale.
GECR engages people in Community Service outside of their own local contexts, placing an emphasis on our roles in this world as global citizens. GECR views Community Service not only as an opportunity to offer one's help to those in need, but also as an exchange of culture, viewpoints, and friendship. Engaging in Service outside of one's own comfort zone provides for an experience like none other. Global Exchange Costa Rica aims to provide people with this life-changing experience in the form of a structured and very affordable Service Trip overseas to Costa Rica's central valley.
